Chicago Bullet Men's Speed Skate Review

Chicago Bullet Men's Speed Skate
Average Reviews:

I would not recommend this product to anyone. First of all they're described as "unisex", but when I received them, they were in a mens size. The second and most important reason I would not recommend these skates is the poor quality. I ordered these for my daughter and two friends as Christmas gifts. It is now only two weeks into January, and two of the three pairs ordered are already broken. Some of my daughter's other friends received the same brand of skates for Christmas as well, and most have broken as well. Save your money!

Ten-Eighty Straight Grind Rail Review

Ten-Eighty Straight Grind Rail
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This grind rail isn't too bad. It's easy to assemble and disassemble which makes it highly portable. Its probably not the most sturdy rail on the market, but its sturdy enough. It can be raised or lowered to 3 different heights which is pretty cool. I think the legs may have holes in them if you want to secure it down to something. I compared the reviews of this rail to many others before purchasing, and this seemed like the best option to me.

Bought these for my 4 year old son (shoe size 9) and can barely fit them on him. They certainly will not last long as they would not fit a bigger shoe. They are the perfect little first skate for a smaller size shoe. I did buy these elsewhere for a whopping $[...], so you should be able to find them cheaper.

FreshPark Professional BMX and Skateboarding Quarter Pipe Review

FreshPark Professional BMX and Skateboarding Quarter Pipe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In my lifetime, I have probably built about 14 halfpipes and at least 25 quarterpipes. The problem is that I live in Ohio and the weather ruins them every year. I prefer a quarterpipe because it is not too obtrusive and you have more time to prepare for tricks. One of the biggest challenges of making a good quarterpipe is getting the bottom sheet to lie flat on the riding surface...especially after a few rainfalls has warped the wood!
I was hesistant to buy this ramp because I had never physically seen it. I had watched videos and read some reviews, but the reviews did not really give mouch specific info...hopefully, this one will!
The ramp is a 9 foot radius and is a bit under 3 feet high. Although this sounds kind of weak, it actually is a fun ramp. The curve is deceptive. If you look at each panel, they almost look flat, but when you ride it, you get a nice lift. Its not vertical, but you can do airs. The transisition gets you to about 65-70 degrees and the coping is excellent. It is metal and fairly burly. Lip tricks are very fun on this ramp. The material of the ramp is an ABS type plastic...it will not rot. I leave my ramp out in the rain. No issues at all on the ramp, although there is some rust on the coping...I may need to paint it, but if you grind daily, it takes care of it.
I am a big skater...I am 6'1" and over 220lbs. This ramp holds me with ease. It has never slid and I can drop it, do rock n rolls, 50/50s and ollies. The ramp does give a bit on landing, but has not changed its original form. The top deck is rather small, but it can support 500 lbs and allows for lap over grinds. The bottom of the ramp is a formed piece of metal which allows for a smooth start to the ramp...I love that. The ramps seems a bit abrupt at first, but you get use to it.
So...here are the pluses and minuses!PLUS
- Can be easily taken down and folded away in winter...or set up in basement!
- The riding surface is fast and smooth.
- You can link more than 1 ramp together...fairly seamlessly.
- Metal support is top notch and all connections are welded on. So much nicer than wood transitions with screws!
- The surface to ramp piece is excellent...very smooth.
- It loks professional. I live in a nice neighborhood. I peeled off the FRESHPARK logo and it looks a lot less obtrusive from the road.
MINUS
- expensive. I bought 2...
- not very wide. One unit is only 4 feet wide. I bought two and hooked them together to form an 8 foot wide ramp. When I just rode the 4 footer, it was not so fun...not a lot of room. Adding the second ramp made it a who new experience..more room and rock solid. Also, when I ride just 1 ramp, there is some sliding of the ramp. My kids can do it without any issue, but I'm a tad bigger. When linked together, no issues..
- the wheels it rolls on are complete garbage. I cannot believe how they skimped on this. I will be looking to replace them. They are plastic and have no bearings...will not take any abuse. For $400 a piece, you think they would give you quality wheels.
- The ramp is loud. As much as I love the bottom piece of metal that allows for a smooth transition, it can make a LOUD clanging noise after repeated rides. I don't really mind it, but I am not sure if my neighbors are thrilled by it!
- Heavy. This is good and bad. It is very solid, which is awesome, but when it is folded up and on its wheels, it is very heavy..150lbs (?) It tips easier than it should. If a child had this fall on him, it would not be good. Unlikeley, but I had it tilt a few times as I moved it. I was strong enough to correct it, but a kid could have problems.
- Potential theft. I think they should provide a bar that you can attach and lock so that nobody can fold it up and take it from your driveway. I have to bolted together with 3 major bolts, so a theif would have to work to get it...but if you only have a 4 footer and leave it outside, it would take minutes to steal.
I love the ramp. I looked for a LONG time for a ramp that would allow me to skate whenever I wanted, but would not require me to rebuild every year. A good quarterpipe costs about $200 to make. You have to relaminate every year and paint etc... This was by far the best solution once I rationalized I would skate it for many years. Those plastic ramps are total garbage...I never even considered them.
I hope that answers any questions about the ramp. Bottom line is that it costs a lot of money, but it is the best value if you want this type of ramp.

Foldable, portable, and remarkably easy to store, the FreshPark professional quarter pipe is a must for skaters who don't have easy access to a nearby skate park. Part of the comprehensive FreshPark skating system, the quarter pipe consists of a sloped main platform, a pair of 33-inch tall legs, and a narrow top platform with seamless 10-gauge steel coping welded into place for smooth grinding.
By itself, you can use the quarter pipe for jumps or tricks, but the product's versatility really stands out when attached to other quarter pipes, which connect either side-by-side or back-to-back. Once the pipes are connected, skaters can go as wide as they want, grind across the top edging, or use the pipe for launching. The quarter pipe also connects to FreshPark's other skating products, including a flat launch ramp, a manual pad, and a kicker ramp. Combine them all and you have an unbeatable, portable skate/bike course that sets up virtually anywhere--in a large driveway, on a suburban street, or in an empty parking lot.
The quarter pipe is covered with a weatherproof urethane/ABS riding surface that's maintenance-free, with no painting or treatment required. And unlike wood, the surface won't splinter, rot, warp, or expand with moisture. And thanks to the 10-gauge cold-rolled steel tubing legs and adjustable leg supports, you needn't worry about the pipe collapsing after a particularly challenging trick. Perhaps most significantly, however, the quarter pipe folds into a compact triangle when you're done skating and comes with detachable wheels, so you can easily store it in a corner of the garage or virtually anywhere else. The pipe, which measures 47 by 33 by 10 inches (W x H x D) at its maximum height and weighs 157 pounds, supports up to 500 pounds and is backed by a 90-day limited warranty.

Chicago Women's Leather Lined Rink Skate Review

Chicago Women's Leather Lined Rink Skate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I haven't skated in 20 years & now I have a 6 year old that wants to go skating every week, so I bought myself these skates. I researched several sites before deciding on these. Many reviews I read warned that this skate runs large. They do run long, but they are narrow. I normally wear a 7.5 Medium shoe. I ordered a 7 skate. The length was perfect, but the width was a tighter fit than I was expecting. The best part was the added padding in the sole, the ankle area and the tongue. I've had foot surgery in the past that has left both my feet very senstive. The first time I skated with my new skates I had no problems with my feet, other than the normal stiffness of a well made leather skate. The wheels look white in the picture, but they are more of a yellowish color. They still look nice & the wheels/bearings are great, much better than what you will find on cheaper skates or even at the roller rink. The wheels came tight, but once your comfortable skating again, just loosen the wheels for faster motion. The tool is included with the skates.

Chicago Girl's Rink Skate Review

My 4-1/2 year old loves these skates, and so do I. Quality is excellent. Performance is exactly where I wanted it to be for a beginning skater - very much more controllable than roller blades. I did have to call the manufacturer before ordering though to clear up my sizing concerns. My daughter's shoe size was a 12 when I ordered and initially I didn't see anything smaller than a 1. Others complained of the big first size. If you scroll down the sizes you will see the smaller sizes at the bottom. I believe there is a J12 and J13. That would be junior 12 and 13. I got the 13 (a size bigger than shoe size) and it is a perfect fit - very easy to put on with just the right amount of room to grow. I highly recommend these skates!

Chicago Men's Leather Lined Rink Skate Review

Chicago Men's Leather Lined Rink Skate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to work at a roller rink and had gotten pretty good at skating. Since leaving town for new and exciting things I have tried various skates out. This is my advice... Do not try and cut corners by getting cheap skates from the thrift store. I tried doing that and low quality kids skates with a plastic chasis are not going to work as well. After experimenting with thrift store roller skates, I had decided to get a pair new.
I settled on these skates as being a good buy for the quality. The skates work well for outdoor skating. Unlike the cheap skates I had tried before, these are more sturdy and I have better control so I can handle sidewalks (without too much of a crack) and smoother asphault.
They have a metal chassis with the jump bar (somehow better). The metal chassis is mostly what I bought them for. A metal chassis will tend to give some warning before it breaks, whereas a plastic chassis will crack suddenly (that can happen with metal parts too, though).
The wheels are not too soft or hard. (Soft is better for outdoor skating where it's bumpier; hard is more for indoor skating where it's smoother.)
The bearings are bearings. ABEC-(higher number) is better than ABEC-(lower number). I think this difference only comes out if you are trying to glide on one foot in an arabesque and need the wheels to keep spinning longer without any extra pushing from you. If you skate outdoors, grit is eventually going to get in and wear the bearings out faster, so it probably won't matter anyway. You will want to maybe get some lube for them or just do what you can to oil them so they last longer. I plan on replacing mine with sealed bearings which grit can't get into (and which will cost more than the skates). You can also buy skates cheap at a thrift store and take the bearings out of those and discard the skate.
The boot has plenty of ankle support, which is good for outdoors. Supposedly they run small. I didn't find that to be the case, but nevertheless, if you are a half size you should round up. A snug fit is best for skates because if your foot slides about inside the skate, then you will not have the control you need. The safest way to get skate size is to see if a local roller rink rents Chicago skates, and try on a pair there. I think that sizing is consistent across Chicago's different models, and these felt as if they were sized similar to Riedell, which is a pretty common rental model.
When my skates arrived, they were aligned correctly, but wheels were not adjusted to all spin the same amount. So when the skates get to you, you are going to want to tighten or loosen the bolt which holds each wheel on so that all wheels spin about the same speed when you push them. The skates come with a skate tool to make this adjustment with, or you can use a wrench. Tightening the bolt will make the skates less slippery, and loosening it will make the wheels more slippery (but not so loose that they wobble), so you may want to adjust them to your preference before beginning.
To check alignment, roll the skate on flat ground and see if it veers to one side. If so you will have to adjust the axle. At the roller rink, I'm pretty sure my boss did this by making adjustments to the bolt that holds the axle in place and then fine tuning by striking the axle with a hammer (but without bending the axle of course). My skates came aligned, but alignment will drift as you use the skates. If one side of your foot is hurting, then it make be because the skate is veering and you are always having to correct that. If so, tighten the bolt that holds in the axle, and then fine tune it with a hammer. You can also make the bolt that holds the axle loose, so that the axles wobble a little. This sounds like a bad idea, but can give you more control.
I could have gone for better quality, but I think I would have to go up to a much higher price range (probably more than 200$) and I would still be looking at switching out parts like bearings. If you are to the point where the better quality is worth the investment to you, then you probably know more about skates than I do and should go with what you want.
Overall, this is a very good choice of skate to try out roller skating or get back into it. This is about the best buy you will get for a quality that will give you some control and will last. Even for children who are going to frustrate you by outgrowing whatever you buy them, it may be best to go with a better quality model, because they are going to have more control. If they are a smaller shoe size, you may try something used. If they are still small, then you might could go cheaper since these are adult skates and can take adult weight. Metal chassis is probably the most important thing to look for if the skates are for outdoor use.
Disclaimers: Roller Derby also offers a fairly good model in this price range. I decided on the Chicago 805 model because of the jump bar. Roller blades (inline) are going to be more stable for skating over uneven surfaces. If you are learning how to skate, then inline skates may be more practical to learn than quad skates just for transportation or whatever.

Razor Sole Skate Review

Razor Sole Skate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been saving some money to get a ripstik, but I decided to get my sole skate the day after I had even heard of it. I took my local bus down to a store where they sell it, and then walked home in the pouring rain. I wanted it THAT badly. I was so excited to ride it right away, but then I realized that I could learn how to ride this little sole skate in the rain; it would be too hard. So I practiced a bit inside my house in my tile hallways. I became a bit disheartened by the lack of progress I was making, and wasn't thinking to highly of my new toy. But this Easter weekend, I decided to take a better shot at learning to ride the thing, and it was pretty much just awesome!
I too live in a place on my street where either direction I take off, I head straight down hill. After an hour of practice or less, I was able to fly down the hills comfortably. Compared to a skateboard, this thing is pretty stable. It is a bit shaky, but not so much that you freak out about how you are probably going to die. It goes pretty fast, but I might put in some ABEC 7's like the other reviewer did. I would be a bit nervous going down my hill though, because it did gain some serious speed.
The turning is ok; it takes a long time to master it especially with the direction you would go putting weight on outside of your feet; turning into the arch is easier (the direction is different for all depending on which foot you put on the sole skate). Sharp turning is pretty much impossible for me right now, though I am getting better.
My favorite thing about this board is its physical qualities. You can just throw it down onto the street and fly; it doesn't break! The compact size is amazing too. It's a bit heavier than I expected, but nothing like the ripstik or a skateboard. You probably would hardly feel it in a backpack. I can't wait until summer when I can strap this to my bike or carry it in a backpack and bring it pretty much everywhere; the beach, the city, etc. But seriously, get this thing!! It's awesome!!!
I am a teenage girl by the way.
--------------------------------------------------------
edit
After about a month, I still love my sole skate, but I feel like I have to tell you some things I have found out about it. It's difficult to use on even slightly rough pavement but not impossible. It gets really loud and shakes, making your foot feel tingly after you get off of it. But it doesn't hurt, so I at least don't find it too bad. But I've also realized how awesome it really is. The weather's been nice, so I've been going around on it and it can take you far! Still 5 stars.

Nextsport Fuzion Electron Scooter (Multiple Colors) Review

Nextsport Fuzion Electron Scooter (Multiple Colors)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I liked the Fuzion Asphalt so much that I bought a couple of the Electrons for my kids when it came out. As I mentioned in my Asphalt review I thought the Asphalt was too big and heavy for young kids and this version seems to have taken care of those problems.
Price: Not too bad considering Amazon is selling them for $50 from a list price of $90. You can get a Razor for about $20 cheaper but this has more articulations. I consider them comparable due to the size.
Of course the biggest difference between the Fuzion and a regular scooter is the ability of the Fuzion to carve. The footplate tilts and the rear wheels turn at the same time effectively giving you 4 wheel steering and the ability to bank your body. In practical terms it means you can steer by throwing your body around by moving your center of gravity just like on a skateboard or skiing. It is this which makes the Fuzion much more fun than a regular scooter. Depending on your ability it'll just take you a few sessions to master this and it's so much fun you'll get addicted to it.
The articulations are similar, but not the same as the larger Asphalt. Though they "do" the same things, I consider the Asphalt's articulations better and more sophisticated and the Electron's simpler and cheaper. I wish that they had made the footplate larger because though an adult can stand with both feet together on the Asphalt, a kid can't do the same with the Electron, they have to do the front and back or diagonal stance same as on the Razor. The folding mechanism is stiff and I doubt a 8-9 year old kid can do it him/herself.
The Electron's wheels are smaller than the Asphalt's and therefore bears less weight but it'd be simple enough to buy a set of larger wheels. Still, I like the 4 wheels because 4 wheels means the weight is more evenly distributed and the ride is smoother compared to a Razor.
Assembly definitely needs an adult. The wheels are easy enough to put on but they designed the handle bar so that it needs to be clamped on with 4 screws and it takes someone with a bit of minimum knowledge that the 4 screws must be tightened evenly.
My verdict is that I wished they had just made a smaller and lighter Asphalt. Why re-invent the wheel? The 360 degree handlebar doesn't do anything functionally and the rear articulation is not as smooth and doesn't go as far. Changing the wheels to a larger or smoother one will probably make a lot of difference.
If your kid doesn't have a scooter, I'd recommend this one over the Razor, but not for Amazon's listed MSRP of $90 though. $40-50 would seem about right. I'd say this one would be OK for any kid anywhere from 7-12 or so. Any older and I'd recommend the bigger Asphalt or any of the other Fuzions. Yes, I'm a fan of these scooters.
