The bottom (which you can't see in the picture) is open and you can either hold it upside down and put snow in it like a bucket to build your blocks, or you can simply press it into the snow on the ground -- it's very easy.
We purchased a couple of these as well as several of the matching red plastic Flexible Flyer Snowball Maker for our boys and the kids in our neighborhood for Christmas -- when the snow comes they have great times building forts and having snowball wars :) We recommend this combination for outdoor winter fun.
A great amount of fun for a surprisingly small amount of money.

The snowballs were neither too soft that disintegrate when thrown; nor were the snowballs packed too tightly making dangerous iceballs. From toddlers to grownups, the tool is very easy to use. Plus, its bright red color makes it very easy to find in the snow.
I would recommend getting one for each child/snowball maker; it's hard to call a "truce" in the middle of a snowball fight to borrow the snowball maker!

(More customer reviews)I wanted to replace a tricycle, because our son was wheeling downhill too fast for me and I wanted him on a more stable, less likely to tip over three wheeler. Now four and at 42" tall, he is just big enough to pedal it. He has a bit of a problem going up our slight hills, but I think that will improve as he gets taller. The adjustable seat works well, and overall is well made and easy to assemble. The flag makes him more visable, but I do not let him ride without me along side on my bike anyway. For me, it is the coolest looking Big Wheel out there. With two more adjustments left in the seat, there's plenty of room for him to grow.
