(More customer reviews)This is one BIG MEAN chain and lock! I'm actually using it to secure a generator because we've had so many stolen in my area. The thieves just use bolt or cable cutters to easily cut through regular chain or cable.
I feel pretty confident that even if they could cut through this chain/lock, it would take way too much time and not worth the effort; there's much easier targets.
For the reviewer who rated this only 1 star because it's so massive: the item description says how big the chain links are and also that it weighs 20+ pounds. They got exactly what they ordered. He also indicated it's too big for a bike, but I know a couple people who use it for their bikes and they're happy with it; in fact they're the ones told me to get it for my generator.

(More customer reviews)I bought this bike lock because it was the best lock on the market (according to reviews), and I figured I will very likely one day own a bike that would be worth stealing. My current bike is not THAT valuable, but I still don't want it stolen...However, now that I own the Fahgettaboudit, it's almost too much...
It's definitely heavy. Wrapping it around my frame causes a noticeable weight increase, especially when leaning the bike and carrying it...plus, if I don't wrap it just right, the lock swings while I'm riding, which has clipped my ankle once (not a very pleasant feeling). The chain will crush just about anything in a backpack, and putting it on the bottom will be annoying when it comes time to take it back out...though a compartmentalized backpack would fix that. Some users say they can fit it around their waste, but when I tried I couldn't keep it on with a winter coat on to boot.
Despite all this, I still highly recommend this lock. It doesn't even occur to me that someone will mess with my bike, no matter where I put it. If you own (or plan on owning) an expensive bike, there's no other way to go.
For those that are wondering if you should upgrade to the 5' chain, I lock my chain to a 4x4 post, and I don't have a problem with it. If you can position your back wheel by the object, 3'3" should be long enough. I can't imagine what another foot and a half would do to the weight...

I for example am a fairly large man who lives in Oaklands famous Killing Zone, where people hesitate to walk around at dusk and most windows have bars and bike theft is the mildest of concerns residents have. So for me carrying a 11lb chain is price worth paying to keep my bike safe, I also use it on my motorcycle.
This chain is a pain at first, it forces you to struggle up the huge hills in the bay area, though now I dare say im in phenomenal shape, and when I do ride with out it I feel superhuman.
If a smaller woman or lesser man tried to carry this chain then they had better take it slow and be ready to have their body crumble under the weight.
The choice for many people with expensive road bikes boils down to this.
1.Think about the endless quest to shave off 40 grams from your sweet Carbon fiber bike, you know the one you wont put stickers on because of weight issues.
2.Now think about doubling the overall weight of the bike and looking like a douche with a giant chain around their shoulder drapped across the even douchier spandex jersey.
2.Now think about your bike being stolen and traded amongst crackheads.
The choice is clear.

OnGuard Brute LS 5000 Bike U-Lock Review

(More customer reviews)After getting a bike stolen, I started looking for some decent U-locks. Since I sometimes lock up two mountain bikes at a time, I needed one with a long shackle. The two best on the market are the Kryptonite New York LS, and the OnGuard Brute LS. The Brute is considerably cheaper, so I decided on the Brute.
As other reviewers have noted, the new, improved version I received differs from the photos on Amazon. I also noticed that the packaging markets this lock to motorcycle/scooter users, not to bicycle users. As a result, no bicycle frame mount was included. I've read reports of OnGuard's bike mount being flimsy and quickly breaking, so the lack of their mount is no big loss. I have a few TwoFish LockBlocks and BikeBlocks that I can use instead, and they are very durable solid rubber mounts.
OnGuard sure likes to give you plenty of extra keys. There is one rather large lighted key and four spares. The lighted key seems more of a gimmick, so I just carry one of the smaller spares on my keyring. Even that was a bit bulky so I cut the key's head down to a small arrowhead shape, following the molded lines in the plastic. Even if you somehow lose all five keys, you're still not out of luck. If you register the lock with OnGuard, you can always order more keys in the future.
The anti-theft insurance offer sounds like a good idea, but if you read all the fine print you'll discover there are enough loopholes to get OnGuard out of paying for most anything. No matter, I didn't buy it for its insurance policy, I bought it for its theft deterrence ability.
The lock itself is very hefty, weighing over five pounds. The shackle is 16.8mm thick, slightly better than the old version's (and Krypto's NY-LS) 16mm shackle. I had an old KryptoSTD lock and I could slightly bend the shackle because it was not hardened steel. I could not bend the Brute's hardened shackle AT ALL. Anyone who tries to cut this with a hacksaw or bolt cutters would get exhausted and give up. It may not stop a determined thief with an angle grinder (no lock can), but it will at least put up a good fight.
